An introduction to traditional
stone carving techniques
On this course you will be shown the importance of drawing in preparation for a carving. Also the relevance of producing a maquette (model): before approaching the stone block. How to transfer a design, from your sketches on paper or clay, onto the block. The stone block and the use of tools is included in the price.

Open discussion will take place throughout a series of classes, which will take place once a month. Advice and guidance will be given at all stages of the carving process.
There will also be an opportunity to explore letter carving, as the course progresses.
Your tutor, Simon Keeley, who presently has 15 years experience and has won various prestigious commissions for the Worshipful Company of Skinners, Westminster Abbey and School. He has also been involved in public artworks, which have been brick carving in Knightsbridge in London and East Oxford. He teaches stone carving at ‘The Art Academy’ on Monday evenings and just appointed to teach at West Dean College.

Introduction to Letter Carving - 2010 -3 Day Block Courses
