An introduction to traditional
stone carving techniques


Teaching 1On this course you will be shown the importance of drawing in preparation for a carving. Also the relevance of producing a maquette (model): before approaching the stone block. How to transfer a design, from your sketches on paper or clay, onto the block. The stone block and the use of tools is included in the price.

Teaching 2Open discussion will take place throughout a series of classes, which will take place once a month. Advice and guidance will be given at all stages of the carving process.

There will also be an opportunity to explore letter carving, as the course progresses.

Your tutor, Simon Keeley, who presently has 12 years experience and has won various prestigious commissions for the Worshipful Company of Skinners, Westminster Abbey and School. He has also been involved in public artworks, which have been brick carving in Knightsbridge in London and East Oxford. He teaches stone carving at ‘The Art Academy’ on Monday evenings and just appointed to teach at West Dean College.

Introduction to traditional stone carving techniques

The Classes  for 2008 , run from 10.00am until 5.00pm, with a half hour break for lunch, please bring a pack lunch, drinks will be provided.

Introduction to Stone carving class fees are £70, please book and pay at least a month in advance to the required date. Please call 07939 337441 when booking a place for details of where to send your payment.

New 3 day ‘Introduction to letter carving class’
From Tuesday 22nd July –Thursday 24th July, classes will run from 10.00am – 5.00pm. 

The course fee for the lettering course will be £230, including a piece of Portland limestone and a piece of slate. Please bring a pack lunch, drinks will be provided.

Courses are run from my studio in Windlesham in Surrey.

Other course available:

'An introduction to stone carving'
'Green man - deep/high relief' - intermediate level
'Introduction to letter carving' - 3 day block (limited places)

All Courses are run from my ‘Summer’ studio in Windlesham in Surrey.

Directions: M3 J3. A322 north, direction Ascot, Windsor, through 1st set of traffic lights. Sharp bend under bridge, take left turning to A30 direction London. Along A30, just after 3rd garden centre, turn right at Windlesham sign. Westwood road, end of S-bend, steep drive on the left,
‘High Chimneys’ Cottage’. Nearest train station Sunningdale (Reading train – from Waterloo).
